Starobeshivska Power Station Satisfied With Brown Coal Powered Boilers

The coat of arms for the Starobeshiv town of the Donetsk region has two bright lightnings. It is a symbol of local power stations. After reconstruction of its block No.4, lightning symbols have become even brighter, and yet safer. After the first update the power produced here can be considered environmentally friendly. The station has in fact completed implementation of one of the largest investment projects in the energy sector of Ukraine.
Anatoliy Lavarko, the Head of the Boiler Department commented on the experiment.

- Mr. Anatoliy, the Starobeshiv power station is more than half a century old. It celebrated its anniversary with a large modernization project. What is the upgrade about and who was your partner at work?
- The station has undergone transformation boiler-and-turbine shop. The old boiler worked out its resources, so we installed a new one. The contract for its construction was signed between the German Lurgi Lthties and Donbasenergo JSC. It cost 72.1 million euro. Total cost of the project exceeds 139 million euro. Of these, 94.496 million euro were provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, 44.7 million euro are funds of the Donbasenergo.
- How was reconstruction special?
- The project involved reconstruction of Strobechiv power station and replacement of a flaring boiler producing 640 tons of steam per hour with a new 670 tons of steam per hour producing boiler that uses solid fuel in circulating fluidized beds.
- How is that?
- We had been adding additional it oil or gas to the solid fuel and received less steam. The new boiler provided new opportunities. Now we will high ash coal, so we do not need these additional oil and gas.
As for circulating fluidized beds, the fuel used to burn out in a furnace throwing exhausts into air, but with circulating fluidized beds the fuel comes back to burn again. We add limestone to decrease the harmful sulfur. Because of low combustion temperature of low-grade coal, which is only 900 degrees, we significantly reduce emissions of harmful oxides. Now we fully comply with international standards.
- Is low-grade coal usage a problem in the coal industry and in the energy sector as well?
- Indeed, coal mining is getting more difficult today. Part of coal produced is of low quality. The new technology opens new opportunities to this kind of coal. Low-grade coal is twice less expensive than high-quality coal, so it affects the cost of energy. With introduction of new energy technologies we will now be able to use sludge accumulated in Donbas. By the way, we tested our new boiler there.
- Will your station increase its capacity after reconstruction?
- Of course, and it will also be environmentally friendly. Today we produce 215 megawatts. By installing filters we will reduce emissions of dust. Today, one cubic meter of air has no more than 50 milligrams of dust, which complies with international standards. As for return on investment for a new boiler, it will be achieved within 5-7 years.
